SPINALONGA ISLAND
According to Venetian documents, the name of the island originated in the Greek expression “to
Elounda”. The Venetians could not understand the expression, so they familiarised it using their own
language and called it spina “thorn” longa “long”, an expression that was also maintained by the
locals. The Venetians were inspired for this expression by the name of an island near Venice called
by the same name and which is known today as the island of Giudecca.
The island was used as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. There were 2 entrances to Spinalonga,
one being the lepers entrance, a tunnel known as “ Dante’s Gate”. This was so named because the
patients did not know what was going to happen to them once they arrived. Spinalonga was one of
the last active leper colonies in Europe.

About the tour
– First stop at Plaka in Elounda. From there you will take the boat
to Spinalonga. The ticket for the boat is 14€ per person and the
the entrance to Spinalonga is 8€ per person. Both tickets are not
included in the excursion’s amount.
– Second stop is at Kritsa traditional village, the most iconic village
in Crete. You could have a beautiful walk in the village, a traditional
meal at traditional taverna and remember to bring an empty bottle
and fill it at any of the taps around the village to enjoy clear mountain
spring water
– Last stop at Vassilakis Olive Oil Factory. You will taste
4 different olive oils and learn what qualities olive oil
connoisseurs look for in an ward-winning oil
The price is 45€ per person for 90min olive oil tasting
and also local food products.

Why Choose Safe Rides Transfer
We used Safe Rides Transfers for a group retreat in Crete and overall had a good experience. The drivers were punctual, professional, and our guests felt well looked after, which we really appreciated. On the coordination side, there’s a bit of room for improvement. Some of the email communication felt repetitive (requesting information that had already been provided), and I found myself needing to follow up for clarification a few times. More clarity and attention to detail in communication would make the process smoother. That said, the actual transfer service itself was reliable and well executed.

Such a great experience! Easy booking, and they are great at answering questions! Our driver was at the pick-up lokation 10 minuts early, and had water for us all day. The driver was kind and explained the cities we drove through, but also let us talk without him so we felt we had a lot of privacy. We drove from Chania to Knossos Palace and to Heraklion in the morning, and at 20.00 we drove back to Chania. Same driver, same comfortable Mercedes, and same good service. We can really recommend this company to everyone!
